Gavroche Books

Gavroche Books is an independent publishing house, created in 2017 by editor and publisher Nika Gavrovska, based in Skopje, North Macedonia and focused primarily on illustrated children’s literature. Gavroche books seeks to publish a carefully chosen range of stories and voices that speak the language of fantasy and originality, all the while encouraging visual literacy. Our picture books library of Macedonian translations of distinguished foreign children’s authors includes JonsMellgren, Nicolai Houm, Rune Markhus, Martin Widmark, Emilia Dziubak, etc.

Gavroche is becoming a home to aspiring local voices of children’s and adult fiction works that include DraganaLukan’s debut novel, Monkey Street, as well as Nika Gavrovska’s and RistoAvramovski’s debut picture book, Bel.

Gavroche also publishes non-fiction works including What is Architecture? And 100 Other Questions and Answers that cover a wide range of issues on the practice and theory of architecture by the Swedish duo Rasmus Waern and Gert Wingardh.

Our projects have been supported by the Swedish Arts Council, NORLA Norwegian Literature Abroad, the Embassy of Sweden in North Macedonia, the Ministry of Culture of North Macedonia and the City of Skopje.

Nika Gavrovska
Publisher and Editor

Born and raised in Skopje, Macedonia, Nika Gavrovska is the founder of Gavroche Books. Gavroche is a small independent publishing house primarily dedicated to illustrated children’s literature. After her postgraduate studies in publishing industry and work experience at the Council of Europe in Graz, Austria, she decides to return to her homeland to start her own business, because, as she puts it: there are a lot of things to be done. Gavroche’s mission is to publish foreign authors translated into Macedonian, as well as to promote quality Macedonian creatives in order to fortify the local market, inspire new authors and promote standards.

She has recently published her first picture book entitled Bel, illustrated by RistoAvramovski. She is currently writing her second MA thesis on the relationship between the Visual and the Textual Element in children’s books at the University of St. Cyril and Methodius where she works as a French literature instructor at the French Language Department.

Marko Gjokovik
Team Member

Marko Gjokovik is Born in Skopje, 1984. During high school he started working in various production companies in Skopje as editor and director. In 2004 he went to European FIlm College in Denmark where studies film directing.

In 2006 he began his studies at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Skopje at the class of prof. Stole Popov. At the moment he is writing his master thesis on film directing at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Skopje, while working on his first long feature film.
